As the mother of two young children, I'm constantly appalled by the prices charged in this country for a day out or a night away.

Here at The Ancient Unicorn, we are offering special room rates throughout the spring months for those of you who want a quiet night away in some of the best countryside England has to offer.

This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, high on the Northern Pennines, is one of the last great undiscovered wildernesses in the country. There is superlative walking right from the doorstep, including short and long distance routes. We can store bicycles overnight for the more energetic of you who can find several cycle routes closeby. Hamsterley Forest offers superb mountain biking for the really brave! There are numerous golf courses in the area and the Tees is a superb river for fishing enthusiasts.

Historians can find a Norman Castle in the village on the site of a Roman settlement, as well as numerous other sites of historic interest within easy reach. Indeed, the University of Durham have recntly made some spectacular finds whilst carrying out investigations in the village and have classified the "vicus" (the settlement which grew up around the fort) as a site of great importance in the country.

Historic Durham with its' fabulous Cathedral and Castle are within 45mins drive and the walled city of York is an hours drive to the south.

Throughout the Spring months, we are offering our rooms from only £25.00 per night, room only. Breakfast is an optional extra at only £7.50 per person.

All that we ask is that you eat in the pub on the night of your stay.

Contractors - we are able to offer a Dinner, Bed and Breakfast package - only £40.00 per person, per night inclusive of B&B and a main course meal from our extensive menu.
